About MAAL APC 2022

MAAL APC 2022 is a biennial conference organised by MAAL and supported by various institutions and organisations. It aims to bring applied linguists from across the regions together to network and share research outcomes and experiences.

MAAL invites academics, policy makers, politicians, government and non-governmental organisations, private organisations, civil societies or the third sector, and the public at large to share their thoughts, research findings and theories on “The Role of Languages In the Pursuit of Global Sustainability” at its inaugural MAAL APC 2022.

THEME

THE ROLE OF LANGUAGES IN THE PURSUIT OF GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY

The quest for sustainability intensifies as the world grapples with challenges from all fronts. With 8 years to “end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity”, the world shoulders a huge challenge to achieve the SDGs. While it does not have a dedicated goal in the SDGs, language plays a significant role in creating, stating, interpreting, understanding, executing and evaluating the SDGs.

However, so far, language only occupies the periphery of the development decision making realm, and in many ways, the absence of language on development discourse is viewed as a significant obstacle to progress. There is a need for stakeholders to reflect deeply on the relationship between language and development especially within the contexts of the SDGs.
